WIDE ISSUE 1. “캠프 하야리아의 미래는” 제하에 2011도코모모코리아 디자인공모전의 대상지 부산의 하야리아 지역을 집중 탐구하고 있습니다. 하야리아 지역은 2008년까지만해도 미군이 사용하던 군사기지로, 일제강점기 때는 군사훈련과 B,C급 한국인 전범들의 훈련소로, 그 이전에는 근대 오락 시설인 경마장으로 사용되던 곳입니다. 50여 년 넘게 군사시설로 사용되는 동안 도시의 구조와 체계를 기형적으로 만들어놓기도 한 장소입니다. 이번호에서는 공모전이 주목하고 있는 하야리아의 도시/건축적 활용 가능성과 장소가 지닌 잠재적 가치를 4인의 전문가 인터뷰를 통해 짚어보기로 했습니다.

WIDE ISSUE 2. “새 시대를 위한 도시 공동 주거” 제하에 김기중(2105 스튜디오 공동대표)의 기고문을 실었습니다.
도시 밀도를 해결하기 위해 꼭 필요한 아파트는 라이프스타일과 도시경관의 획일화를 비롯하여 우범지대 형성과 같은 사회적 문제 또한 발생시켜왔습니다. 김 대표는 도시고밀도 주거문제를 해결하면서 동시에 아파트로 인해 생기는 도시문제를 해결하기 위한 방법으로 도시의 연속선상에서 도시와 소통할 수 있는 단지계획, 전면 철거형의 개발방식이 아닌 공존의 개념을 포함하는 새로운 개발방식의 수립, 유형과 규모의 다양화, 차별화된 디자인, 그리고 사업성에 대한 고려에 이르기까지 세부전략을 말합니다.
WIDE ISSUE 3. 경영위치(김승회+강원필)가 작업한 “롯데부여리조트 <백상원>”을 특집했습니다. <백상원>은 콘도 300 유니트와 컨벤션홀, 물놀이시설, 식당 등의 부대시설로 구성되어 있습니다. 현대적 언어로 된 말발굽형의 주 건물 저층부에 부대시설이 돌아가면서 채워지고, 그 사이사이로 마당들이 있으며, 진입부에는 한옥의 원형 회랑이 자리하고 있는 독특한 모습을 띄고 있습니다.
<백상원>은 백제재현단지와 전통문화학교 사이에 조성되는 테마파크의 첫 시발점으로 아직 그림이 그려지지 않은 마스터 플랜에 잘 적응하고 또 잘 작동해야한다는 부담감과 그다지 크지 않은 대지에 규모가 큰 매스를 어떻게 만들고 또 그 관계들을 어떻게 설정할지에 대한 고민이 많았다고 김승회는 말합니다.

PANGYO Houses designed by Joon-Ho Park and Seung-Yeon Lee
P-House designed by co-chief architects Joon-Ho Park and Seung-Yeon Lee of EAST4 having ground to establish new direction of art, architecture & culture was recently completed. S-House that was completed prior to P-House are two houses out of four housing projects on the go at once in Pankyo area. The architects said that Pankyo housing projects were a process of finding the essence of architect’s work. In other words, a house should not be the object of a symbolic architectural icon or an experiment, but it should be a place where the occupants’ daily life, all sorts of emotions and memories are made. In fact, requirements from the client of S-House who was living with two daughters and grandmother and that of P-House who had a newborn daughter in the middle of design process were preferentially reflected through interacting with them. Of course, the requirements were applied in the method of filtering the architectural design and space that EAST4’s architects expressed. page 081

The 8th DOCOMOMO-Korea Design Competition, Adaptive Re-Used of Camp Hialeah
Camp Hialeah was selected as a field for the 8th DOCOMOMO-Korea Design Competition this year. The region of Camp Hialeah had used for a horse racetrack and a military training camp during Japanese colonial era and the U.S. Army base up to 2002. Use of military facilities for more than 50 years has led the region to freakish urban structure and system. As many of the U.S. military bases are to be relocated or merged, it is expected that similar problems will become an issue in several cities. Thus, we pointed out the meaning and several issues of this competition that offers a good opportunity to debate on the good use of the bases and urban regeneration. page 025

Apartment for a New Era
Apartment is necessary to resolve the housing problem in highly-populated urban areas, but it, on the other hand, has created social problems such as lifestyle, uniformity of cityscape and formation of a crime-ridden district. Ki-Joong Kim, President of Studio 2105, suggested a strategy for an apartment plan to solve both a high-density housing problem and urban problems caused by apartment. It includes; a site plan that makes possible to communicate with a city on the basis of continuity of the space, a new development plan that includes the concept of coexistance to avoid overall removal of the existing buildings, diversification of the shape and scale, differentiated design, and consideration of business value. Into the foreseeable future, apartments for urbanite will consistently exist, and they will coexist with detached houses and other different shape apartments. Korean architects should take more interest in the new design of urban apartment. page 038

Lotte Buyeo Resort <BackSangWon>
BackSangWon(百想園) is the building that was first constructed on the site of Lotte Buyeo Resort, and it has 300 condominium units and subsidiary facilities such as a convention hall, a water recreation center and a restaurant. Seung-Hoy Kim, the co-president of K.Y.W.C. Architects and a professor of Seoul National University, designed the building. When designing, he had to consider two points. First, the site is located in the capital of Baekje Dynasty. Second, the style of Korean traditional architecture was also important because the site is facing Baekje History Restoration Site under government’s project. On the one hand he had the goal of suggesting a new pattern of condominium through this project, and on the other hand he thought how the building as a starting point of the whole site of the resort would adapt to the future landscape and overall system. As the final outcome, the building has drastically-curved external appearance and traditional wooden corridors, and the architect expects that visitors can imagine Baekje Dynasty in the 6th century. In the middle of last January, a reporter of WIDE-AR could have a chance to meet the building at workshop. Several viewpoints are suggested in the main text. page 045
