WIDE WORK. 형식이나 관행으로부터 벗어나 무규칙적 토종 건축가의 길을 걸었던 고 차운기의 제자 원희연(원희연건축연구소 대표 건축가)의 작업들을 주목했습니다. 그의 처녀작이자 차운기의 유작이기도 한 신교동 주택과 최근의 리모델링 작품인 카페 H-Works, 대학로 재즈스토리 등을 통하여 삶을 풍요롭게 만드는 건축행위란 과연 어떤 것일까를 곱씹어보게 하는 기회가 되었습니다. 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 재료나 폐자재를 활용하여 설계에서 시공까지 모든 집짓기 과정을 직접 손으로 작업하는 원희연의 작품은 낯설정도로 자유분방함을 특징으로 합니다. 제도권 교육과 규범화된 건축이 구축해온 강박증을 떨쳐 버리고,무모함 속에 솔직함과 위트를 담고 있는 그의 건축은 즐길만한 가치가 있습니다. 인터뷰 ‘몸으로 만드는 건축, 몸으로 느끼는 세계'(정귀원), 비평 ‘기억을 자극하는 더미'(장정제), 사진(남궁선)이 실려 있습니다.

WIDE ISSUE 1. “‘젊은 건축가상’을 말하다” 제하에 올해로 세번째 공모가 시작된 젊은 건축가상을 계기로 1, 2회 수상자들과 뉴욕 ‘젊은 건축가상’ 수상자들의 이야기를 담았습니다. 인터뷰에는 김현진(SPLK 대표), 신승수(디자인그룹 오즈 소장), 양성구(에테르 쉽 대표), 양수인(더 리빙 공동대표), 유현준(홍익대 건축대학 교수), 임도균+조준호(루연건축 공동대표),임지택(한양대 교수), 조한(홍익대 건축대학 교수), 최성희+로랑 페레이라(최페레이라 공동대표) 등이 참여하였고, 인터뷰는 강권정예(본지 객원기자)가 진행하였으며 대면 인터뷰를 기초로 서면 인터뷰 방식도 병행하였습니다.

Hee-Yeon Won who continues the tradition of non-regulative indigenous architect
Hee-Yeon Won who have done distinctive and creative works is a disciple of the late Woon-Ki Cha who had pursued a non-regulative indigenous architect becoming free from formality and custom. Shinkyodong House that is not only his maiden work but also Woon-Ki Cha’s posthumous work and recently remodeled buildings named ‘Cafe H-works’ and ‘Jazz Story’ make us think what architectural acts should be to make a bountiful life in a modern society requiring the bigger and the faster ones. His world of architectural work that he takes matters into his own hands from design to construction using commonplace materials inclusive of wastes and recycling materials around us is free-wheeling to an unfamiliar extent. An architect and a client could share necessary experience and knowledge each other and come into close relation through the way of working like this handcrafting and slow-esthetics. page 027

Review of the 7th Docomomo-Korea Design Contest
In past years, the residents of Baedari in Incheon have been exhausted in order to deter the construction of industrial road penetrating the middle of the town. On the one hand the region of Buksung-dong of Jung-gu was constructed as a modern town by Japan, China and Western powers, but on the other hand, the region of Baedari was spontaneously constructed as a modern town by our ancestors. For the reason, the two towns are regarded as hetero-ovular twins. The historical modern town of Baedari was rent in two by the construction of industrial road. Fierce opposition of the residents with the support of community could make the road construct underground, and Baedari is recovering its injured space and seeking measures to be reborn as a historic culture town. Based on the current situation of Baedari, Docomomo-Korea Design Contest has concentrated ideas of 1000 undergraduate and graduate student teams that are related to architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture all over the country. page 057

A Discourse on Young Architect Awards of Korea
The third Young Architect Awards contest under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will be held this year. Although the architectural circle of Korea expresses considerable sympathy and support to the intent of this award that builds up architecture and architects, we ask specific and practicable measures to correct mistakes and problems in implementing process at an early stage. Various thoughts on architects award will be told by seven teams of the prize winners for 2008 & 2009 and two Korean winners of Young Architect Awards of New York. page 071
