WIDE WORK. 이번 호에는 유행이나 이슈에 편승하지 않고 건축 본연의 주제에 깊이있는 시선으로 이야기를 만들어가는 이일훈(후리건축 대표 건축가)의 오래된 작품, “자비의 침묵 수도원-한국순교복자성직수도회 순교자의 모후 신학원”을 주목했습니다. 수도자들의 검박한 집이지만 건축가가 세상에 말을 거는 방식에 대하여 궁구해볼 수 있는 기회가 되었습니다. 실시설계 납품도면에 1993년 7월 날짜가 박혀 있으니 참으로 많은 시간이 흐른 뒤의 건축물 특집이 이뤄진 셈입니다. 진행(정귀원), 사진(진효숙) 그리고 박영대(우리신학연구소 소장)의 글 ‘불편함으로 점성 정신을 익히는 자비의 침묵 수도원’이 실려 있습니다. 본문은 40쪽에 달하는 책 속의 책 개념으로 편집되어 집의 분위기와 잘 어울립니다.
WIDE ISSUE 1. “제2회 심원건축학술상”을 특집하고 있습니다. 당선작은 서정일(서울대 HK연구교수)의 <소통의 도시-루이스 칸의 도시 건축 1960~1974>이 차지하였습니다. 심사는 배형민(서울시립대 교수), 안창모(경기대건축전문대학원 교수), 전봉희(서울대 교수) 3인이 맡았습니다. 본문은 ‘경과보고’, ‘심사평’, ‘당선작 요약문’, ‘당선소감’으로 구성되어 있습니다.
WIDE ISSUE 2. 게릴라성 건축집단 AnLstudio(안기현, 이민수)의 작업, 오션스코프(Ocean Scope)를 특집하였습니다. 컨테이너를 소재로 한 구축물인 오션스코프의 탄생 뒷이야기와 작업 관련된 건축가의 밀착 인터뷰(지정우)와 리포트(강권정예), 프로젝트 기획자이자 디렉터인 장길황의 인터뷰(편집실)를 싣고 있습니다.
WIDE ISSUE 3. “건축 설계 사상 세계 초유의 수주액을 기록한 무영건축 이야기” 제하에 사우디아라비아의 수도 리야드에 판교급 신도시 2곳을 조성하는 프로젝트에 5억 6,420만 달러라는 초대형 설계계약을 체결함으로써 일약 화제의 중심에 선 안길원(무영건축) 회장을 만나 사업 성사 배경의 궁금증과 실현 가능성을 알아보는 기획 대담을 진행하였습니다. 대담에는 안길원, 임창복(성균관대 건축학과 교수) 2인이 함께 했고, 무영건축 전은배(사장), 조영수(상무)와 전진삼(본지 발행인)이 배석하였습니다.

The Monastery of Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs and Architect E, Il-Hoon
The monastery of Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs is an architect E, Il-Hoon’s work designed in 1993. This community is a living space for incoming student monks who practice asceticism to cultivate their body and mind. Because the architect thought that the monks resolved to live in uncomfort, he planned to build inconvenient monastery to the full. He also thought that uncomfortable living to the utmost would help their monasticism. We can find this characteristic through the catholic church located far from their living space, narrow corridors, another catholic church without roof, stairs without handrail and cheaply coarse building materials. The suggestion how to live, not how to build, in other words, living in uncomfort is the peculiarity of E, Il-Hoon’s style of architecture that is revealed by the methodology of chae-nanum. page 023

Penetrating the Heart of Oil Money with Our Strength of Architecture
Mooyoung Architects & Engineers(MAE/Chairman, Kil-Won An) won the contract of architectural design of New Town Development for Riyadh North and Southwest Projects, Saudi Arabia. Its scale is equal to two new towns of Pankyo class of Korea. Since the subprime mortgage shock originated from the States, MAE obtained a successful outcome in the middle of highly-elated crisis of construction and architectural design market both at home and abroad, and they broke the world record in the history of architectural design in terms of the total value of order. We have paid attention to what points of our architecture with consideration of the project contents could enhance the competitiveness in the world market. page 059

Announcement of the Prize Winner of the 2nd Simwon Architectural Award for Academic Researcher
The 2nd Simwon Architectural Award for Academic Researcher being held under the sponsorship of Simwon Foundation of Culture selected <Communicative City_Louis I. Kahn’s Urban Projects in 1960-74> written by Seo, Jeong-il as a prize winner. Simwon Architectural Award for Academic Researcher was established in 2008 and supports up-and-coming scholars and prospective writers in the areas of architectural theory, history and critic along with esthetics. One rookie is to be chosen among the candidates in the subject areas above annually. Awards ceremony in company with the publication party of the 1st prize winner is to be held on June 18. page 018

Ocean Scope : The Viewing Platform Giving Views over Incheon Bridge
Ocean Scope located at Songdo International Business District of Incheon is a sculpture inspired by container being a symbol of logistics. Unlike existing container structures that are horizontally piled up, it makes an image of soaring towards the sky by means of setting three container-shaped structures at 10, 30 and 50-degree angle to the ground. AnLstudio that is composed of Ahn, Kee-Hyun and Lee, Min-Soo living in Brussels and New York respectively suggested this scintillating idea, and they have been aiming at guerrilla architecture group having free design thoughts and respecting differences each other. page 084
